Peer Links is a quarterly publication available through CILT’s Peer Support Program. This newsletter includes articles on topics that are important to YOU as peers with disabilities. As consumers with disabilities, it is important for us to know which resources are out there, and how to access them. CILT will continue to deliver as much information to you as possible regarding latest disability issues, community events and consumers’ shared experiences. The Ontario Government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy was announced at 1 pm on Dec. 4th. The ODSP Action Coalition’s Steering Committee and Media and Lobbying Committee met to discuss our initial response. Health Canada is warning Canadians, especially expectant mothers, not to use two vitamin C products sold under the brand names New Roots Herbal Vitamin C8 and Vitazan Professional Vitamin C Advanced Ascorbate. In emergency situations, people with disabilities are affected in a variety of ways, depending on the type(s) of disabilities they have. Mobility Limitations may make it difficult for a person to use the stairs or to move quickly over long distances; Vision Loss can affect a person’s ability to read signs or move through unfamiliar environments; Hearing Loss can make it difficult to respond to emergency warnings and to follow instructions to safety; and Non-Visible Disabilities may affect a person’s ability to perform some tasks. The Canadian Association of Independent Living Centres (CAILC) launched Investing in Futures: An Independent Living Approach to Education Savings Incentives. It is a three year national project that will support member Independent Living Resource Centres (ILRCs), like CILT, to provide post-secondary education and savings resources, tools and supports to parents with disabilities as well as the parents of children with disabilities.
Research suggests that people with disabilities are more likely to be overweight or obese than other population groups. On the other hand, some people with disabilities are prone to unwanted weight loss. For example, a person who has a physical disability may lose muscle mass, or may find it difficult to eat and swallow. There are various management strategies that can help a person with a disability successfully manage their weight. See your doctor or dietitian for expert advice.
The Gateways to Cancer Screening Project has been on hold for the past few months because we were awaiting approval from the Research Ethics Board at the University of Toronto (one of the project partners) before we were able to go ahead and begin the focus groups. After great anticipation, we have received approval and it’s on with the show.
Healthy relationships are characterized by respect, sharing and trust. They are based on the belief that both partners are equal, that the power and control in the relationship are equally shared.
